FAMILY FOURSOMES
BURHILL FAMILY FOURSOMES
Major Stephens, Burhill Club Secretary launched the Family Foursomes in 1937 after playing in an inaugural Fathers and Daughters competition at West Sussex Golf Club. The success of this event, now discontinued, led Major Stephens to add Mothers and Sons to the idea - a new concept. The first competition, played on the Old Course, attracted an entry of only 23 couples - probably as it was played off scratch rather than handicap and has continued to grow over the years. A near record 98 couples took part in the 50th anniversary meeting in August 1987.
From humble beginnings the Family Foursomes event has developed into a tournament recognised in the official golfing calendar and reported in the national press. Due to many entrants work commitments, the meeting has gone from a 5 day to a 4 day event but is still firmly in most past competitors calendars. We very much hope it will become one of yours and look forward to welcoming you to part of Burhill history.
